Dongphu Chukhor Monastery
Preserved in a way that maintains a traditional day-to-day life, the Dongphu Chukhor Monastery is located in Chitosho village. The town is known for its easy, slow pace and is run in a traditional manner. Because of its location and preservation, the town and monastery are quite popular with tourists and tour groups. Inside the monastery is a beautiful painting of the 5th Dalai Lama. The chapel was originally dedicated to the five Dhyani Buddhas and is centered on a statue of Nampa Namse. The upper floor served as an overnight residence in 1959 for the Dalai Lama when he was on his way to exile in India.
Getting There: Chitosho village, 23 kilometers from Gongkar. Busses also run regularly from Tsetang and Lhasa. A five minute walk from the southern main highway.
